Tutoring Tips

Volunteer

All potential tutors must: 

  1. Read, write, and speak English well.
  2. Have at least a high school education.
  3. Be at least 21 years old.
  4. Complete our training workshop (either Basic Literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages). Trainees must participate in discussions and activities, complete light homework assignments between sessions, and attend all sessions. Matches will be made only with trainees who demonstrate an understanding of the material and techniques.
  5. Pay workshop materials fee of $35 (includes manual & worksheets).
  6. Be available to tutor once or twice a week, 1 - 2 hours per session, for at least one year.
  7. Be able to travel to tutoring locations.
  8. Report tutoring activities and student achievements regularly.

BASIC LITERACY (BL)

Participants in these workshops will be trained to tutor adults in basic reading and writing.

Six Tuesday afternoons from 12:30 to 3:00 pm.

ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)

Participants in this workshop will be trained to tutor adults in conversational English. (No knowledge of the student’s language is required.)

Individuals trained in these workshops can tutor in Albany or Schenectady.

If workshops need to be cancelled or rescheduled due to low enrollment,

prospective tutors will be notified.


TUTOR RECERTIFICATION

To continue in the program, certified tutors will be evaluated on a match-by-match basis against the following criteria:

  1. Regular attendance and punctuality at tutoring sessions.

  2. Responsiveness to reasonable needs and requests of the learner (e.g., materials, learning strategies, tutoring environment).

  3. Relevance and quality of lesson planning.

  4. Regular recording and reporting of volunteer hours and student progress.

  5. Attendance at in-service workshops as appropriate.
